Vintage Posters

Vintage posters were first introduced in Paris in the last half of the 19th century. With the development of 3 color stone lithography by Jules Cheret, posters took on a whole new life. The walls and fences of Paris became plastered with advertisements to entice the general public with a vast array of products and services. Advances in printing techniques and access to many new inexpensive products and a public with a little more money and time created the perfect environment for this new visual revolution.

In the Golden Age of poster production nearly all of the items produced were pasted on outdoor walls and fences or displayed in metro stations and travel offices. Sometimes only a very few hundred examples were printed for the collectible market. These examples that have survived the test of time have ended up in museums, private collections and discovered from time to time in old printers' shops.

Vintage posters make attractive additions to any home and office decor and may also provide a excellent investment opportunity. The Library of Congress in Washington D.C., The Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Musee de la Publicite, a department of the Louvre in Paris, all have vintage posters in their permanent collections
